A college education should be more than just sitting in a classroom and at Indiana University Columbus there are a number of opportunities for students to get real-world experience to prepare for the career that lies ahead.
College is more than just classrooms
Student Research
The Office of Student Research promotes intellectual inquiry and innovation to enrich the educational experiences of students by providing support for research projects that engage them in academic scholarship which contributes in meaningful ways to south central Indiana communities and beyond.
Internships
An internship is an effective way of gaining experience and test-driving a job or a career interest. Students earn class credit and also get paid while completing their internships, which usually require a 10-15 hour per week.
Study Abroad
Students at IU Columbus have access to more than 380 study abroad programs across the IU system, including those at IU Indianapolis and IU Bloomington. Program lengths range from a few days to an entire semester.Nursing Clinicals
Students working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (B.S.N.) are required to take a clinical coursework which puts them into the field for hands-on experience at one of IUPUC’s regional healthcare partners.
IU Cadet Program
The Cadet Officer Program, normally two years in length, allows full-time Indiana University students to work in the criminal justice system and in a law enforcement agency while pursuing their degree.
Completion of the Cadet Officer Program, which includes the Indiana University Police Academy, provides comprehensive and unique law enforcement training which, coupled with the university's educational programs, produces a highly qualified, experienced, and educated law enforcement professional.
Elementary Education Classroom Experience
For students who want a teaching career, IU Columbus gets you into the classroom right from the start. First-year students will spend time at local elementary schools observing classrooms, interviewing teachers, and even helping on occasion. During their final semester, all teacher-candidates will complete sixteen weeks of student teaching in a local elementary school, providing the opportunity to connect theory to practice and apply what they have learned in their content and education courses.
Campus Jobs
Student employment is not only a great way to earn extra money on a flexible schedule, but students can also gain valuable experience in their chosen field of study. Many of the academic divisions and campus offices have opportunities for students to do meaningful work that can be proudly included on their resume.
