Finding financial aid for summer classes

If you’re an undergraduate or graduate student planning to take summer classes, you may be able to get certain loans and grants during the summer. After you’ve enrolled in summer classes, we’ll let you know whether you’re eligible for aid. To be considered for summer aid, you must have filed your FAFSA and meet the eligibility requirements:

• You must be enrolled in a minimum number of credit hours:
  • Undergraduates: At least six hours
  • Graduate students: At least four hours
• You must be making satisfactory academic progress.
• You’ll need to be approved for a consortium if you’re attending summer classes on another IU campus.

Different loan and grant programs may have additional requirements.

Loans

You may be able to borrow a Federal Direct Loan unless you’ve already borrowed the maximum allowed for the academic year. Other summer aid could include:

• Federal Parent PLUS Loans
• Federal Graduate PLUS Loans
• Private loans

Pell Grants

If you’re an undergraduate student who received a less-than-full-time Pell Grant during the academic year, you may be eligible for one in the summer.

Grants and scholarships for Indiana residents

If you’re an undergraduate Indiana resident, you may be eligible to receive summer aid from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE). Note that summer aid from the CHE will count toward your four-year maximum.

Grants for children of veterans or public safety officers

If you’re eligible for a Child of Deceased or Disabled Veteran Grant or a Children and Spouse of Public Safety Officers Supplemental Grant, you must file your FAFSA prior to applying for the grant.
