Understanding your financial aid options

You have many options when it comes to finding financial aid to pay for college. Before you borrow money, make sure you understand the types of aid that are available.

Grants

If you have financial need, you may qualify for one or more grants. Grants are known as "gift aid" and don't have to be paid back.

Loans

You can apply to borrow money from the U.S. government or private lenders. Loans must be paid back with interest, usually after you finish your education—even if you don't complete your degree.

Work-study

Work-study is earned as wages through a part-time job, usually on or near campus.

Summer aid

If you're taking summer classes, you may be eligible to receive financial aid.
