Biographical Statement

Chris is a native of Columbus, IN, graduating from Columbus North High school. After receiving her undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of North Dakota, she began her career as a classroom teacher before returning to Indiana University Bloomington to complete both a Master's and a Ph.D. degree. At IUB, she worked as a mathematics content specialist at the Center for Innovation in Assessment where she collaborated with the Indiana Department of Education on the creation of the state's mathematics academic standards and supporting resources. During the 2006-07 academic year, Chris served as a visiting professor at IUPUI's School of Education. In the fall of 2007, she began her work at IUPUC where she teaches in the Elementary Teacher Education program. Chris' research focus is secondary analysis of mathematics results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). She currently serves as co-Principal Investigator on a NAEP secondary analysis grant funded by the National Science Foundation and housed at IU Bloomington.

Research Activities

The predominant aim of Chris’s research is to shed light on student achievement in mathematics by using quantitative data to make sense of trends in student achievement. In 2002, she began work as a doctoral student with IU-SMAP (Indiana University School Mathematics Assessment Project), funded with a grant from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In July of 2010, the National Science Foundation awarded $1.5 million for the IU-SMAP group to continue researching the NAEP secure dataset. Chris currently serves as co-Principal Investigator on this three-year grant.
