Once you have earned an IU Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in education, and completed the appropriate licensure exams, you will be prepared to pursue professional licensure so you can begin teaching in Indiana or another state.
- Between now, and January 1, 2020, individuals receiving licenses will be under Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability (REPA) framework.
- Beginning on January 1, 2020, all new license applications will fall under the Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability 3 (REPA3), which updates licensing language in the State of Indiana.
- Graduates of the elementary education program applying for licensure under REPA will be eligible for an original (initial) generalist license in two school settings: (1) elementary primary and (2) elementary intermediate. To apply for an Indiana teaching license you will need to create a profile and submit your license application with the Indiana Department of Education's Licensing Verification and Information System (LVIS).
- If you have a degree in education, but did not complete it at IU Columbus, and you seek an initial Indiana instructional license, please consult the Indiana Department of Education's Office of Educator Effectiveness and Licensing (OEEL) website for how to apply for your license.
If you complete coursework in English as a new language, or special education, please make sure to provide documentation of passing licensure test scores to the Division of Education. We will process your licensure application for the specific content area once we receive your score. If you are taking a middle school licensure test, ensure your scores are reported directly to the Indiana Department of Education,as they will process your license application.
- The State of Indiana requires that ALL applicants for licensure pass all required tests and report the scores to the appropriate offices. This includes the academic skills assessment required for admission into a Teacher Preparation Program, and the appropriate licensure exams.
- Individuals applying for initial licensure on or after September 1, 2021, are required to take and pass the appropriate Developmental/Pedagogy tests administered by ETS Praxis. For more information on educator testing, visit https://www.in.gov/doe/educators/educator-licensing/educator-testing/.
- The State of Indiana allows licensed educators to add some content areas to an existing active license solely by passing the appropriate licensure test. The Indiana Department of Education processes applications for licensure through testing. Call 317.232.9010 for information.

- In order to obtain an Indiana teaching license, individuals must complete the appropriate Indiana Core Assessments for Teacher Licensure.
- Elementary education majors will need to complete two exams for licensure: Elementary Education Generalist (K-6) exam, which consists of four subtests (060, 061, 062, and 063) and the Elementary Developmental/Pedagogy exam (005).
- Individuals who have completed the courses and student teaching for English as a new language (019) or Special Education (025) will need to take the appropriate exam in order to obtain a license in this area.
The state of Indiana requires valid CPR/AED/Heimlich Maneuver certification of initial license AND license renewal applications. Submit completion documentation to the licensing advisors. Your training must come for an Indiana Department of Education approved provider.
Effective July 1, 2013, all applicants for an initial instructional license at any grade level must provide documentation of successfully completing education and training on the prevention of child suicide and the recognition of the signs that a student may be considering suicide. The Indiana Department of Education provides a list of resources and qualified providers.
