Global Gateway for Teachers

Gain global experience

As a student in the Teacher Education Program (TEP), you can participate in an immersive multicultural project for an even more enriching and rewarding student teaching experience.

Global Gateway experiences are administered by the Indiana University School of Education in Bloomington. A representative from the program visits IU Columbus each fall so you can learn more about this exciting opportunity.

This challenging option requires a two-year commitment, beginning with a preparation phase comprised of monthly classes, reading assignments, and a workshop. Once you begin the project, you will spend at least eight weeks away from your home campus.

With this option, you will have one student teaching placement in a general education K–6 classroom in a local school district and a second placement arranged through the immersion program.

Locations

If approved, you will spend part or all of your final semester away from IU Columbus and work with students from a different cultural background in their own classrooms. Choose from three experiences:

  • The Overseas Program provides student placements in countries like Australia, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, England, Greece, Ireland, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, or Wales.
  • The Navajo Nation Program includes placements on Navajo reservations in Arizona, New Mexico, or Utah.
  • The Urban Program offers placements in the Chicago Public Schools.

Some financial aid may be available to defray travel and living expenses, but you must have the means to pay for the experience.
