Supplemental Instruction to Support Students
Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides peer support inside and outside the classroom to enhance student engagement. Using trained Student Leaders, SI offers extra resources to students in a non-intimidating, but informed manner.
SI Leaders offer SI sessions weekly and also provide individual study sessions. Attendance at SI sessions is by student choice.
The Gateway Community of Practice now has ten semesters of data which begin to show impact over time.
This table below shows grade distribution in courses that are supported by the SI framework compared to grade distribution in similar courses without the benefit of Supplemental Instruction. Our goal is to achieve DFW rates of 20% or lower in SI courses. We met this goal in the Fall of 2019 and have consistently shown lower DFW rates than non-SI courses.
Students had this to say:
- Great program – very lucky to have extra time with my SI Leader
- My SI Leader was AMAZING!! Very helpful in the classroom and always available by email.
- My learning experiences would not have been the same without SI
